Holiday Giving Project – 2020

September 30th, 2020

It is always a good time to think of those less fortunate, but especially during the coming holiday season. The pandemic has hurt our economy, and many families are now finding it difficult to survive. Once again the DWCNV will support Fairfax County Firefighters and Friends to the Rescue and Britepaths through our Holiday Giving Program.
For years, the Firefighters and Friends have organized a toy and gift card drive for children throughout Northern Virginia. The organization also uses our contributions to purchase winter coats for hundreds of children in our area–more than 3,000 coats every winter!
Suggested donations to Fairfax County Firefighters and Friends to the Rescue:
  • gift cards to Target, Best Buy, Amazon, or Walmart. These stores have a huge selection of gift cards that you can print right from your computer! Many websites offer the ability to buy a gift card online and have it shipped to you for free! The gift cards go to older children who are often forgotten during holiday gift giving.
  • checks of any amount made payable to Fairfax Co. Firefighters and Friends to the Rescue.
How to donate: Mail checks or gift cards to DWCNV, PO Box 143, Clifton, VA 20124. Unwrapped, new toys can be mailed or delivered to Debbie Charms as well (address sent upon request). Donations will be accepted until December 5th.
Suggested donations to Britepaths:
  • grocery store gift cards to Giant, Wegmans, Safeway, Target, Walmart, etc.
  • checks in any amount made payable to Britepaths.
How to donate: Mail checks or gift cards to DWCNV at DWCNV, P.O. Box 143, Clifton, VA 20124.  Donations to Britepaths will be accepted until December 31st.

Come on down and bring your friends! You can sign up at this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c054eadaf28aaf49-clifton3
Volunteers will meet in the driveway of the old Clifton Elementary School, 7010 Clifton Road, Clifton, VA 20124. You can help out for an hour or two, on either or both days, whatever works for our volunteers.
Participants will be given a safety vest and a quick safety briefing. You and your team will be assigned an area along the road. For safety reasons, we do not recommend bringing children under 12 years old. For teens needing service hours, this is a great project.

DWCNV Events 2020

March 2nd, 2020
March 15th.  DWCNV General Meeting.  Topic: The Economy: Tax Cuts, Deficit, Labor Market, Trade, etc.

It is a truth universally acknowledged …  That what goes up, must come down

The US economy has entered the 11th year of economic growth, a record expansion. How long can that continue? Economists like to say that expansions don’t die of old age, so what will cause the next downturn?

Economics editor Heather Scott will explain where the experts are looking for signs of trouble and the data they watch. Denny Gulino, veteran economics journalist and editor, will focus on the longer term outlook for the US economy, including the implications of high debt levels, low productivity, and a paralyzed Congress.

We will also hear about unemployment being near a 50-year low, and black unemployment being the lowest on record, but wages have not kept pace. Is the job market really that good?

Economic data is neutral but can be cherry-picked to distort the picture. You will hear about how you should read the data to get a real picture.

A member of the Senate of Virginia will discuss the State’s economy.

And you will be able to ask your questions of the experts!

Please attend our Sunday, March 15th DWCNV meeting from 3-5 p.m. at the Clifton Town Hall, 12641 Chapel Road, Clifton, VA 20124.   This meeting is open to the general public.
