When Anger Rises, Choose Joy: Lessons from No Small Endeavor

I was recently listening to an interview on Lee C. Camp’s podcast called No Small Endeavor, in which he spoke with Sharon McMahon, affectionately known as “America’s Government Teacher,” and it really left an impression on me.

Then Lee followed it up in his recent newsletter with the following amazing advice: (Which I printed and put on my desk to look at every morning.)

  • “When you’re easily angered, you’re easily manipulated.”

  • You can’t do everything, but you can do something, and sometimes that “something” is for one person.

  • Joy as an act of resistance.

When you feel yourself growing angry in a way that serves no good in the world, step away from the source.

Then, find one specific way to offer mercy or kindness to a friend, a stranger, or your community. Do it quietly, maybe even anonymously.

And as you do, laugh, sing, play, or dance, because joy, too, is part of the work.
