Our Roots, Our Rise

We have grown from grassroots beginnings into a powerful local voice for progress.

In late 2004, after a disappointing Presidential election, a small group of women in Clifton came together to form a Democratic women’s group focused on education and community connection. Their efforts quickly gained momentum, leading to a February 2005 kickoff event where more than 100 women gathered to hear from local leaders and shape the organization’s purpose.

From these beginnings, the Democratic Women of Clifton (later known as the Democratic Women of Clifton and Northern Virginia) launched a series of initiatives, including forums, educational meetings, newsletters, and community activities that continue to this day.

What started as a vision to connect and empower local Democratic women has grown into a vibrant and influential organization that provides educational information, fosters meaningful dialogue, and creates opportunities for members to deepen their understanding of political issues. Through our work, members build lasting friendships, stay informed about candidates and policy issues, and are inspired to take individual action based on their own values and priorities across Northern Virginia.

We remain committed to our founding principle: empowering women through education and community, so each member can engage civically in ways that reflect their personal convictions.
