From the Senate to the Cinema: Real Talk on the AI Threat

I just received a nice update from Senator Warner on his efforts around AI, where he said the following: “We’ve seen the warning signs – big companies are announcing massive layoffs, citing increases in productivity due to AI… and it’s not just the layoffs, I fear. I’m also worried that more and more employers will quietly fail to post new jobs in the first place, pulling the rug out from young adults struggling to find their first job. And it’s not just white-collar work or tech jobs – if automation continues, we could see millions of truck and taxi drivers displaced by self-driving cars. If these kinds of massive changes occur, it could cause a huge contraction across the entire economy, as folks cut unnecessary spending. Waiters, baristas, airline employees, manufacturers, and more would get hit by the collapse in demand. Millions of young adults need to be able to start their lives, afford a home, build a family, and do work that gives them meaning and purpose. We need solutions NOW to get ready for these AI-driven changes and support young people.” There are so many issues to speak out on, and we owe it to our democracy to use our voices and take the “people power” back for the people. |
Speaking of AI, I saw the AI DOC, and I think you should too. Movie Review I took my reluctant husband to see the AI DOC over the weekend. He is an optimist. I would say I tend to be a pessimist. So he was worried this would be a doomer movie. I was worried it would be a pie-in-the-sky AI will solve everything movie. Well, it was both. By which I mean it explains what could go right and how it all could go terribly wrong. Plus, you get to hear that from the AI company CEOs, literally from the horse's mouth. The movie is quirky, funny, and entertaining, even with the heavy subject matter. In the end, the movie left me with hope because there is a narrow path to the best of AI. However, navigating that path should NOT be left up to the tech billionaires or the government; we, the people, should get a vote. We have to make our voices heard on this one; we simply can’t get this wrong. As the producer said at the end of the movie, “the only thing you can’t do right now is be a cynical a$$hole.” Got it. DO something. See the movie. You won’t regret it. We all want a pro-human future! |
