Elect Abigail Spanberger, Governor

Abigail believes Virginians deserve a Governor who will defend our fundamental rights, including free speech, and the right to vote. As the next Governor of Virginia, Abigail will defend the right to contraception, the right to choose, the right to access in vitro fertilization (IVF), and the right to represent our own gender identity however we feel most comfortable. Electing a governor who will support reproductive rights is more important than ever, as Virginia is the only state in the South that has yet to roll back protections for women’s reproductive rights following the Dobbs decision.

In Congress, Abigail voted to codify Roe v. Wade into federal law, protect contraception access, and defend the right of Americans to travel across state lines to seek reproductive care. As Virginia’s next Governor, Abigail will sign into law legislation to protect the right to contraception. She will also make sure the Commonwealth is on the path to codifying reproductive rights in the Virginia Constitution.

Abigail will also continue to protect the right to start a family. In Congress, Abigail worked to safeguard access to fertility technology, including IVF, and will continue to do the same as Governor.

The United States has the highest maternal mortality rates of any developed, high-income nation, with rates even higher for Black and Hispanic mothers. In response, Abigail will also continue to pursue policies that will make Virginia a leader in combating maternal mortality.

While Democrat Abigail Spanberger fully supports expanding access to all health care and protecting rights to reproductive health care, her opponent, GOP extremist Winsome Earle-Sears, supports a near-total ban on abortion in Virginia, including banning abortion without exceptions for rape or incest. Earle-Sears actually threatened abortion rights supporters, saying, “Murder is murder and one day it is going to be your turn.”

Winsome Earle-Sears also supported a national ban on same-sex marriage, voted to cut funding for AIDS clinics in Virginia, and has campaigned with hate groups and anti-gay activists.” Earle-Sears has taken a stand to overturn Virginia’s ban on conversion therapy. This practice attempts to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity, which the American Psychological Association said is not rooted in science and can be harmful. She repeatedly voted to make abortion a felony in Virginia and said women "need to make our choices before we’re pregnant."

While acting as president of the Senate this past spring, Earle-Sears was required to sign Virginia’s in-progress reproductive rights constitutional amendment; yet, apparently, she so objected to this bill that she added her personal objection in a handwritten note just above her signature, “I am morally opposed to this bill; no protection for the child.” Earle-Sears had similarly penned a personal message of objection scrawled on last year’s bill to prohibit officials from denying marriage licenses to same-sex or interracial couples. You can take Earle-Sears at her word; she opposes abortion and the right to reproductive health care, she objects to LGBTQ+ rights, and even to interracial marriage! Earle-Sears is out of step with the views of most Virginians.

Our families deserve better than that. They deserve Abigail Spanberger’s leadership as Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Early voting is ongoing through November 1, 2025.
